Forty days after his birth, Jesus was taken by Mary and Joseph to the temple to be presented to the Lord (cf. LkLc 2,22), according to what the law of Moses prescribes: “Every first-born male shall be consecrated to the Lord” (Lc 2,23); and to offer in sacrifice “a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons, in accord with the dictate in the law of the Lord” (Lc 2,24).
